IONIC Named Preferred Building Partner with Wendy's Restaurant

Ionic DeZign Studios was invited to participate in planning session in Columbus Ohio, home of the famous Wendy's Restaurant brand this week. A select number of architects and builders were gathered to brainstorm the collective process and  numerous challenges involved in renovating or building a new Wendy's Restaurant.

The two day seminar brought parties together from all over the US including Canada.  We reviewed the past and then discussed growth plans through 2020. It was a great team building experience that allowed us to CONNECT, LEARN and GROW by sharing best practices in the architecture and construction industries.

Dahlia White, Director of Restaurant Architecture for IONIC has managed the design of more than 150 different stores since we were first began working with the hamburger giant and assisting in their rebranding exercise in 2011. We were asked at that time to assist in their rebranding exercise. Dahlia continues to build relationships with Wendy’s while managing their current projects. She was excited to finally meet face-to-face with many project members that so often are only a voice on the phone or a name on the email. It felt like coming together for a Wendy’s family reunion!

During the conference, both Dahlia, along with  Eugene Thompson, Founder + President of IONIC participated in a quick design charette study for a non-traditional location in downtown Philadelphia. It was a corner spot that previously housed a two-story historic bank structure clad in white stone. This was a fun opportunity for us all to collaborate to come up with possible solutions for a unique design challenge. There will be more locations like this in the coming years as it is anticipated that about 30% of future Wendy’s projects will be non-traditional in nature.

It was an excellent experience and an opportunity for IONIC to continue to grow throughout the country. Our firm hopes to continue assisting corporate and franchise owners with their redevelopment work. TEAM IONIC is also looking to work with owners and contractors who share our desire to produce quality work for all.

We don't cut corners!

Let us help with your Wendy's or other restaurant project. Please feel free to give us a call to discuss how we can help and serve you.

Entrepreneurial Excellence Award 2016

I'm feeling pretty excited about the news we received for not only being able to participate in the panel discussion at the Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards in June but to also being blessed as a receiptient honoree. Truthfully feeling incredibly blessed and humbled. So many times these events are focused on the individuals and their own personal accomplishments however I know that none of my success could have even been nearly close to possible without three keys ingredients:
1. My Lord
I'm amazed at how he carries a wreck like me to the finish line everyday. He give me strength when I have none. He has blessed me when I don't deserve any. I find hope in his words when I'm lost. Unfortunately that is often.
2. My Family
It's true that they love you despite yourself....mine is no different. They've always been there to encourage me even during the darkest battles. Giving me strength and support during each challenge. I would have accomplished nothing without their love.
3. My Friends
So it's probably not politically correct to say this but my office team are my friends. They have made me successful. They are the ones I turn to daily and share my life with whether it's a silly story, enduring challenge or painful defeat. They have rallied around my war cry time and time again supporting the hurdles of business before us.

I look forward to sharing more at the awards ceremony on June 13 2016 at the Founders Inn.
Thanks to everyone who believed in me.

Why Haven't I Accepted You on LinkedIn?

It's pretty simple process that LinkedIn was founded upon and unfortunately it doesn't seem to work that way too often. Referrals, introductions and recommendations......not cold calls. Sorry if that seems rude but you can always LIKE me on Facebook if you prefer. Here is an clip from a book I have been reading, "Never Eat Alone" by Keith Ferrazzi that outlines my same thoughts.

IONIC tackles Financial Institutions

Over the last month our office has been blessed with rewards in our pursuit of financial institutions specifically credit unions. We have been working on several local flag ship projects for several months. One is getting ready to start construction shortly while the other has been submitted for permits. Both look to finish construction by the end of the year or the first quarter of 2017.

We have been fortunate to work with Chartway is assisting their expansion and new branding efforts as far away as Houston Texas and Warwick Rhode Island. Texas is under construction and Rhode Island kicks off next week. Other local locations are in the works to evaluate existing offices for their potential renovations.

Navy Federal Credit Union started it all off a few years ago when we were selected to help with their new branch location in Chesapeake. Since then we have done nearly a dozen locations for them including one in Jacksonville Florida. Recently we were awarded the new construction project in Bowie Maryland.

Any day now we expect the Beach Muncipal Credit Union to be awarded and it will begin construction in Virginia Beach near the courthouse area. Be on the look out for our construction sign soon.

We thank our clients for trusting IONIC and allowing us to serve. We look forward to the new construction breaking ground all over. Best of luck and much success to all.

City Council Approval!

Well, believe it or not we received approval from the Norfolk city council on Tuesday night for the acceptance of the new flagship Chartway Federal Credit Union. I say "BELIEVE IT OR NOT" because only a few weeks prior Norfolk planning commission voted unanimously against it 0-7. So why the switch to a near complete flip for a 6-1 in favor? I think it was a matter of misunderstandings not clearly explained.

It wasn't about the building going there.....accepted by zoning.
It wasn't about the design....everyone was in favor of the look IONIC created.
The only reason we had to go in front of council was because we needed a drive thru on the bank which requires a special exception. Nothing else should have been up for discussion. However that isn't exactly how the story went.

The planning department indicated to our design team which included Pennoni for civil engineering, that the planning commission had this huge thing about moving buildings up onto the street front. They expected that this was going to be the case. Especially since we were in the Transit Overlay District. (TOD)......Whooo wait a minute! We are not currently in a TOD zone. We are in a potential TOD zone due to the light rail station right across the street. One of the purposes, which I feel is a great idea by the planning department and the city of norfolk in most cases, is to promote more pedestrian friendly buildings and circulation around areas with public transportation hubs.

However, even though there is a lite rail station across the street, this isn't currently a very friendly pedestrian environment. Have you ever been on the intersection of Newtown Road and Kempsville? It's pretty crazy busy with cars....which is why Chartway liked the location for its most heavily vehicular traveled branch. The surrounding buildings look to be long term users and redevelopment of this interesection doesn't appear to be in the near future.

To move the building up on the street corner would have prevented internal circulation of cars wrapping around the building properly to enter the drive thru teller line. It just wouldn't work. It would make the project unfeasible. However that isn't what the planning commission understood. They clearly just wanted a building up on the corner regardless of the functionality effected. That really shouldn't have been open for discussion. Remember we were really only there to get a drive thru approved. Without the drive thru, we could build the building and place it pretty much where we wanted on the site.

The design team did listen to the planning commissions requests and desires to make this a pedestrian friendly corner taking the opportunity to embellish the corner with a pedestrian table. It was elevated and brick paved to the street corner allowing the easy flow of pedestrians to the front doorway of the branch. We felt it was a really good compromise with the future TOD plans. So did city council. Thankfully we move forward with our project instead of a convenience store.

Congratulations to ELK HILL

Congratulations to Elk Hill on the successful completion of the biggest capital campaign in its 45-year history:  a total of $7,335,000 has been donated to the Elk Hill 20/20 campaign!

Elk Hill 20/20 focuses on endowment support and program expansion, enhancement and innovation.  It will define Elk Hill’s future for generations to come.  The campaign will help to reach more children and their families sooner to empower them to become stronger and healthier through its early intervention programs, including summer camps, and elementary school services.

WHHA  + Ionic DeZign Studios has served Elk Hill for more than 25 years by Master Planning the historic Goochland campus once owned by Thomas Jefferson, and designing 11 of the facility’s buildings, including the Scott Center, the Brown Dining Hall, and the W. E. Singleton Chapel.

The Singleton Chapel has become a symbol of the spirit that has guided so many kids to the successful return to their families and their communities.

William Henry Harris, WHHA  + Ionic DeZign Studios principal architect and longtime Board of Trustees member, says the firm is now looking forward to providing design services for the transformation of Ball Cottage into the new Elementary School envisioned as part of the campaign.

WHHA  + Ionic DeZign Studios is proud to be a part of the Elk Hill family and its expansion to five campuses throughout Central Virginia.

Kiddie Academy Groundbreaking

February 1, 2016 we celebrated the groundbreaking at the new Kiddie Academy site in Virginia Beach. This was a social occasion for everyone not just our wonderful clients, David and Judy Martin. What wondeful people. They were so excited. They make my job so much fun. Of course they were ecstatic about all that surrounded this specific event as it was their very own "baby." Their first such venture. Wonderful friends and family showed up in support. I love that!

It was special for IONIC as well. We have done a gazillion buildings, but we don't often that we get to be involved in such an event as a groundbreaking. We were privileged to be asked to participate. It turned out to be a beautiful day after having to be postponed a few weeks when the snow storm attacked us here at the beach. It was nice for the weather to cooperate with us.

David Martin gave a few words about their project and welcomed the guests before introducing the participants. Eugene Thompson shared a few words about the first meeting with the Martins and thanked the entire team; it would not have been possible without them. Virginia Beach's Mayor Will Sessoms gave a few words and congratulated all for their success. Afterwards, a prayer of thanksgiving and then on to the ground breaking.

Jokingly, we were beyond breaking ground at that point as the background shows. We had the slab poured and the steel erected already. The beginning of the wood framing started to blossom that morning. The general contractor Mackenzie Construction, was taking full advantage of the kind weather and had made excellent progress.

We thank all those that were involved in the planning of the project to get us this far. We are all excited to see it unfold in the coming weeks and months towards completion. Stayed tuned for additional updates on our website, Facebook and Twitter!

The Entrepreneurial Marathon

The Entrepreneurial Marathon
by Eugene Thompson

Planning, commitment, perseverance and endurance are just a few words that often are used to describe individuals that run a marathon. Those adjectives are also often used to portray entrepreneurial leaders that successfully run a corporation. I don't believe there is any question of the similarities in both endeavors. Being a successful business leader is about engaging your journey like a marathon, not a sprint. If you’ve actually run a marathon, you know the high at the starting line and the low of mile 20 when you just can’t take one more step.

The real question we should ask ourselves is, “Do marathon runners make better leaders?”

I didn’t consider myself a runner when I started in 2013 at 47 years old. Runners are  naturals who stride through the miles with the greatest of ease and speed. It was something that was vital for me to learn. How many people think the same thing of successful leaders? …that it must be natural and easy for them? Maybe for some, but not for most of us. Anything less than a marathon might be accomplished by sheer determination. However for consistent success, proper training is required.

Here are some similarities that I have found along my personal journey.

COMMITMENT
What level of commitment has been given to this new endeavor? For myself, I announced on social media of my intentions of running a marathon in January of 2014. This was in response to my mother passing away from the ill effects brought on by diabetes. My father passed away from the same twenty-five years earlier. I too have diabetes.

How about your determination to succeed in your business? For myself, I resigned from my job with no other options but to push ahead and force myself to succeed. My family expected me to provide for them. Sheer desire and will power were the determining factors for success.

Failure wasn’t an option.

GAME PLAN
Less than 1% of the country's population will run and complete a full marathon. Similarly about that many entrepreneurs achieve businesses with revenue over $1M. In the case of a marathon, not many can just decide to run a marathon without training. It takes countless hours of training short and long distances to finally achieve that 26.2 mile reward. A strategic plan is created outlining the number of miles each week with increasing goals as the imminent date approaches. Food plans and diets are an important factor in maintaining your energy and fuel. Other foods like greasy burgers or alcohol might need to be eliminated from your diet.

Likewise with a business you cannot expect to open the office doors and have the “they will come” attitude. Probably not the best business plan. An idea requires a well thought out plan and proper preparation. Maybe smaller steps are required at first with modest increases as the business develops and grows. Don't think about making more revenue as your only objective. Hiring employees, developing marketing strategies, customer service and accounting procedures should be carefully considered for the business to grow successfully.

Consider all the requirements necessary to succeed.

STARTING LINE
On the day of your first marathon the excitement is high. There are thousands of individuals packed into the corral awaiting the start. Feeling insignificant for the moment and very much alone. Butterflies in your stomach exist but you tell yourself you got this, after all you have trained and prepared for this day. A few friendly strangers share words of encouragement on your new adventure. Waiting for the start of the race is the most difficult part.

Beginning a business venture can feel like the start of a race. Exciting but lonely. Scary and not necessarily secure in oneself. Sure a few people congratulate you and share encouraging words but honestly when times get tough they will not be there to help you. You'll need to run it on your own. At the start everything takes so long until you can actually RUN. Waiting for your opportunity to do what you have prepared for.

And then you hear the bullhorn……it's time to begin!

ENDURANCE
The race begins and the first thing you do……start off way too fast. Your training and game plan reminds you of the intended pace, however the excitement of the moment and the adrenaline has you nearly sprinting during the first few miles. Slow down and stick to your agenda. This is an endurance race not a sprint. Consistency will be required if you intend on making it to the finish line. By mile 5 or 6 you begin to pass those that started too fast as well. At mile 12 or 13, the half way point, you see others struggling. You wonder if they will finish. You wonder if you will finish.

So many times there are those that get caught up in the beginning of a business and do not focus on their business plan. To run a business for a few years is not your goal, it is a long term investment and it will take endurance to achieve success. 50% of businesses never make it past the fifth year. Only 25% will see their fifteenth anniversary.

Endurance is the ultimate driving factor in completing the entrepreneurial marathon.

PERSEVERANCE
It was never explained how difficult it would be when you “hit the wall”. That invisible barrier somewhere after mile 18 hits hard. Knees are hurting, legs aching, stomach empty and by now your soaked in sweat. Inside your mind you ask yourself why you ever wanted to run a marathon. Your self confidence wavers as doubt begins to grab a foothold inside your head.

Every business has it’s own struggles and every leader needs to respond to the hurdles it faces. There will be some, possibly even many, over the course of the business life. That wall presents itself as a slowed economy, difficult clients, competitors, finding responsible employees and more overwhelming problems. The only way to navigate through is to remember your initial motivation and dreams, grit your teeth and push through the pain.

Defy the doubt!

THE FINISH LINE
A successful leader takes responsiblity for action and reaction, decision and indecision. Likewise for every success and every failure. The same holds true for a marathon runner. Failing to develop proper plans in the beginning can guarantee failure before the starting gun fires. The inability to maintain your endurance or persevere through the difficult times can cause you to collapse before gaining sight of the finish line. The successful leader knows how to run the race and balance all aspects of the challenges of a marathon. They understand the skills which are required to position themselves with just enough reserves to sprint that last half mile and cross the finish line victoriously!

These are the remarkable parallels between the qualities required to be a marathon runner and that of a successful leader in any organization. Victory is now yours.…..now try repeating that over and over. Have a FUN RUN!

After completing six marathons Eugene’s first year, he signed up for fourteen full marathons for 2015. All in the hopes of encouraging more awareness about diabetes for those suffering. Follow his exploits on Facebook. RunEugeneRun
